| Day 2 April 26, 2008 By Nick Gebhardt |
On Day Two of the Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup in Punta Gorda, low winds and calm waters greeted anglers as they chatted with each other before launch.
Redfish Cup staff asked several competitors the following three questions:
1. How will lower winds affect your fishing today? 2. What will be the cut weight to make it on Sunday? 3. Why have we seen heavier bags this year over prior tournaments at the same venue? |
Artie Price, Jr., 39th, 4.20 pounds
Lower winds? “I think it will make for a tougher bite. There will be more weekend anglers out there today, too.”
Cut weight? “Twenty-five pounds.”
Heavier bags? “Because there’s a lot more fish here and a lot more bait right now.”

Steve Loyd, 14th, 11.59
Lower winds? “Now, it could help everybody and make people fish slower and quieter.”
Cut weight? “I’m going to go with 27 pounds.”
Heavier bags? “A lot of fish up north into Sarasota Bay to catch. And the fish are a lot fatter.”

Kevin Mihailoff, 44th, 2.11
Lower winds? “It means we could still make the run we made yesterday, but I think we’ll stay close instead.”
Cut weight? “I’d say 24 pounds.”
Heavier bags? “The guys are simply catching them. Plus, there are more anglers with different knowledge this year.”

Adam Loud, 27th, 8.10
Lower winds? “The wind slowed the water movement yesterday. Today, less wind should improve the sight fishing.”
Cut weight? “Probably 26, 27 pounds to get in.”
Heavier bags? “The new format. Now, you have the best of the best fishing this tournament. The Redfish Cup has really raised the bar over here.”

Chuck Howard, 25th, 8.23
Lower winds? “The wind hasn’t really been a factor for us—the tide’s been more of a factor than anything. But when it blows out of the east over here, it’s not a bad thing.”
Cut weight? “Twenty-four pounds.”
Heavier bags? “There’s a lot of good fish right now. We had 12 from the field who caught over 12 pounds, I think, yesterday.”
